Stroking my member

Dear Hawkeye7,

Thank you for your email. The conservative coalition government in the UK has expressed support for marriage equality and is conducting community consultation on the matter – to my knowledge, no legislation has yet been drafted. But I appreciate David Cameron’s comments on this, and quoted him in parliament last year.

As a vocal supporter of marriage equality, I share your disappoint that Australia has not progressed this far. The ALP’s stance on marriage equality is to allow members to vote with their conscience on the issue; contrast this to the Coalition’s binding negative vote. Personally I am in favour of amending the Marriage Act to allow individuals to wed regardless of their gender or sexuality, and I have spoken about this in Parliament on several occasions.

I will continue to hold these views and advocate for equality.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Leigh
