For All the Saints

Where I grew up, you would walk into many a shop and see on the wall a yellowing newspaper picture of the 1966 St Kilda premiership team. St Kilda had left the old Junction Oval in St Kilda back in 1964 and moved down the road to the Moorabbin Oval, where we would go to see them play every other week. St Kilda had been a foundation member of the VFA in 1877 and the VFL in 1897 but in all those years only won one premiership. In 1966. By one point. Against Collingwood.

The club also played in Grand Finals in 1913, 1965, 1971, and 1997 but lost. The 2009 season saw a long series of wins, including one over also undefeated Geelong in round 14, and reigning premiers Hawthorn in round 20. For a while, it looked like the side could do no wrong and would go through 2009 undefeated but a pair of losses (by a total of seven points) derailed this and deadened spirits again. The team still won the minor premiership - as it had previously done in 1965 and 1997 - but now looked as if it was losing form at just the wrong time.

Sunday saw the Saints face Collingwood in the 1st Qualifying Final and post a 24 point win. The old home side is now only one win from another Grand Final...
