That's always been an odd perk. If you need one for your job, your employer should buy you one. If you don't, it shouldn't be tax-free.

I never understood it at all. Especially when you were admitting that you were not using it work purposes. And if you did, you could depreciate the whole value, including the GST that you didn't pay.

I also thought that it distorted the market in favour of laptops over desktops.

I need to find out more. Since my beautiful baby has been stolen I need a new laptop. Yes work could buy me one but they will only spend up to a certain cost.

I want a tablet PC which work won't buy. So I'm going to buy it myself and it will be used for work purposes.

Not sure what the new legislation around this.

I desperately need a laptop to work!!! I can't drag my desktop around!

All that has happened is that FBT now applies to laptops, whereas before they were exempt. If you buy one for work purposes, you can still depreciate it.

My condolences on the loss of your tablet PC.
